Cris Tales Review- Story, Combat, Characters & Everything Else You Need To Know Before You Buy!
Chris tales is a beautiful adventure game that tells the story of crispel who lives in an orphanage in the small town of nirim in the crystallus kingdom.
one day while she is picking roses in the garden for mother superior the leader of the orphanage, a talking frog named matthias steals a rose from her.
crispel is following the frog through the village until she finds him inside the nerium cathedral.
where the magic crystals are located by interacting with them she finds out about her powers to manipulate time.
shortly after that the village is getting attacked by minions of the empress of the ages who is aiming to destroy the crystallus kingdom for years already and wants to use the crystals for her own plans.
now it’s up to crispel and mathias to defeat the kingdom against the intruders and team up with up to 7 mages and warriors that she meets during her journey and that can be added to her party.
but the most interesting gameplay part of chris tales is surely the time travelling mechanic, once crispel found the crystal in the cathedral the screen is split into three sections like a prism.
in the center part you can see the present in the left section the past and in the right section the future and you can watch how everything is changing while you walk through the game.
you can see how the people and the environment have looked like in the past and also how everything will evolve in the future.
that also means once you change something in either of the sections especially in the past and present the other sections will change as well.
so you are able to see in real time how the story will evolve with the decisions you make.
but not only can you take a look at past and future you can also travel between all the sections with the help of matthias the frog.
you can simply send him to another section to interact with npcs or to take action.
you can for example send mathias to plant a tree in the past then jump back to the present and collect the fruits.
but the time travelling mechanic can not only be used to solve puzzles explore the world and complete missions, it is also helpful during combat.
the combat system in general is turn based with commands to select skills abilities and items of your party members and an additional time frame in which you can press the attack button again to do a double attack or to block and parry an incoming attack.
during crispr’s turn she can use the time crystals to send enemies either to the past or to the future depending on the site they are attacking from.
enemies on the left side can only be sent to the past while enemies on the right side can only be sent to the future.
this way crystal can manipulate their characteristics and abilities.
if there is a pack of grown up wolves for example they will only be puppies in the past or in the future on the other hand they will be weak and old.
but it’s not always obvious what will happen to the characters in the other time sections.
they can also be stronger or more experienced so manipulating time in the right situation is the key to success.
besides using time travels for herself crystal can also support the attacks and abilities of her party members.
when there is an enemy with an iron shield that blocks every attack for example a teammate can spray water on the shield and cryspel can send them to the future, where the shield started to rust and can’t be used for blocking anymore.
so sometimes the combat system turns into a puzzle game especially during boss fights as each boss has different attacks and abilities and reacts differently to time manipulation and it takes a while to find the right strategy.
but overall chris tales is an awesome new take on the turin-based adventure genre with a beautiful design and stunning hand-drawn graphics.
inspired by the colombian culture and architecture all dialogues are dubbed in english with subtitles in other languages.
the play time of the game is about 20 hours for the main quests and a bit more when you want to complete all side missions as well.
crystals will be released on july 20th for pc and all consoles including Nintendo switch and it will be available in two different versions. as standard edition physical and digital for forty dollar and is collector’s edition only physical for 100. this includes the
base game an art book a matthias plushie pin and sticker sets and a set of digital wallpapers.
if you’re not sure if chris tales is the right game for you or not there’s also a demo available on all platforms with which you can play about one hour of the game.
Cris Tales Review Ps5
chris tales is a turn-based grpg developed by colombian indie game developer dreams incorporated and sick.
it will be released for most current gen consoles and pc on july the 20th of 2021.
we’ve reviewed the game ourselves on the ps5.
the main character of the game is chris bell this is an orphan girl who lives in a small town of naren who turns out to have special time altering powers.
together with matthias a talking frog wilhelm who is also a time mage and a warrior named christopher a long journey across the land begins.
as the story unfolds you will learn everything there is to know about the strange world the adventure takes place in.
the most notable aspect of the game is that you can alter time in and out of combat. during combat you can for example use these powers to poison an enemy and then advance the time so that all added poison effects hit the enemy all at once.
outside of combat the screen is split into three triangular sections.
the center shows present time the past on the left and the future is on the right. matthias the frog can jump to the past and future to perform actions there that will affect the present.
as you will get further in the game you will also get other time altering powers as well the way the present past and future incorporated into one game screen is very nicely done and in some actions you can directly see what effects your choices and present have on the future.
another thing that you directly notice is the art style of chris tales.
the game is entirely drawn by hand in 2d and gives a truly unique feeling to the gaming experience.
there are so many games out there but not many have a unique feel to it like crystal does. the colors and style of every game aspect is something that i applaud for as nowadays not a lot of game developers there to try something new.
the good thing is that it not only looks good but plays good as well.
Anyone who has played the grpg before knows beforehand what they’re getting into in terms of combat. the player and the enemy take turns attacking each other and in the top of the screen you can see whose turn it will be next.
the basics from the grpg combat system stay the same with the exception of time manipulation which which gives a welcoming twist to the genre which pushes you to think about more strategic ways to defeat enemies.
another fun twist is that when you’re defending you need to hit a button at the moment that enemy attacks to parry their attack to receive less damage and on the attacking side you need to hit the button at the moment your attack hits to give the enemy additional damage.
these are in my opinion fun tweaks to
make slow movement of combat of jrpgs a little bit more engaging.
when you first get introduced to combat i found it quite difficult to win battles and it felt like the game was maybe too difficult.
but once you get the healing skill with chris bell the game becomes much easier.
you unlock new skills by leveling up characters through combat. therefore i usually explore the entire combat area as it would never be underpowered to the enemies at hand.
healing before battles is recommended if needed and can be done with skills and potions as well during battles.
you can also strengthen your characters a bit using equipment such as bracers rings boots etc. the best of this equipment can be found in chess throughout the game so it pays off to wander around in the game world.
you can also upgrade your weapons through a weapon shop and add up to 3 bonuses to the weapon through additional equipment.
all these upgrades are only for stat increases and don’t alter the aesthetics of your characters.
the story itself is mostly being told through spoken and unspoken dialogues and a few cutscenes.
one thing i can’t really understand though is that sometimes the written text is different than the lines that are spoken and that for some reason some tanks is not spoken at all.
it didn’t bother me but it felt a little bit weird and that’s all since most of the game dialogues are spoken. overall i enjoyed the story and didn’t feel the developers added more dialogues to fill up the story to make it longer than was needed.
sound effects and music are good enough for this style of game.
most of the voice acting is good although for some reason the volume randomly increases and decreases during conversations at time.
the music itself is coming out of combat a little bit more upbeat during.
this works perfectly for the game i’ve completed the entire game without encountering any bug at all but one where the gameplay area was a little bit messed up.
this was a little bit weird but not disturbing for my game session i’ve never been stuck somewhere and since the game is too 2d-ish you will never encounter any camera problems.
so well should you pick up this game for fans of grpgs i can only recommend it but for those of you who don’t like it or are not yet familiar with the genre i find it difficult to give an opinion.
also if strategy is your thing the combat system might be something you like for me personally i would rate the game between a seven and a half or an eight.
considering the price it’s being sold for the unique graphic style and the time you can pass for the low price i consider chris tales a great deal.
